Main Research Areas: Acoustic impedance measurements of musical wind instuments. The three systems used for investigation are the Two-Microphone-Four Calibration (TMFC), the Brass Instrument Analysis System (BIAS) and the Acoustic Pulse Reflectometer (APR). From the experimentally determined impedance other useful properties can be derived such as the input impulse response (IIR) and bore reconstruction.

About

Darren Hendrie gained his Masters Degree (with Honours) in Physics at the University of Edinburgh in 2004. He obtained his PhD, also from Edinburgh University, in 2008. His thesis title is “Development of Bore Reconstruction Techniques Applied to the Study of Brass Wind Instruments.” He held a Post-Doctoral position in the year 2010-2011 with the Edinburgh Physics Education Research Group under the instruction of Prof. Simon Bates, Dr. Ross Galloway and Dr. Judy Hardy investigating student study habits and development of problem solving techniques over the course of semester’s worth of teaching. He has tutored in various physics, maths and computational undergraduate courses in the School of Physics, the School of Biology and the Institute for Astronomy. He has also worked with the Edinburgh College of Art on their Architectural Acoustics undergraduate programme running workshops, mini-lectures and conducting reverberation and noise level experiments in various acoustic spaces. He has lectured and tutored on the Musical Acoustics 1 course which has been nominated for “Best Course in 2011” by the Edinburgh University Students Association. He is one of the mentors that works alongside students with learning difficulties via the University’s Disability Office. He is currently Course Organiser for the Dynamics 3 programme in the School of Engineering, one of the head supervisors for the Physics 1B and Physics 2B laboratories and is also involved with the Physics 3 laboratory.
